Quality and Dependability in Manufacturing for Over 125 Years Charles E. Green & Son, Inc. is reputed to be the oldest company of its kind in the United States. Founded in 1876, the management of the company has followed an unbroken line from the founder Charles E. Green down to his fifth generation grandson John V. Green III and sixth generation grandaughter, Rebecca Sullivan. For over a century , Charles E Green & Son has produced brush ferrules and aluminum inserts. Changes with our products have reflected the changes that have taken place in the industry, with brush styles and use. Our business began when Charles E. Green left his native Connecticut home to set up shop in New York City to supply the broom and brush industry. By 1900 he moved the firm to Newark, New Jersey. This is where ferrules were first made from sheet stock, that was then formed by hand over mandrels, solder and hot dipped galavanized. This process of ferrule making continued with Vanderbelt Green as president until about World War I. Shortly there after, Green designed and built 6 machines that were belt driven to form ferrules that were "lockseam". Up until a few years ago, we were still running 3 of those orginal machines by using electrical motors. While John V. Green was president, we had a workforce of 25 people. Ferrules at this time were made only 1-1/4 deep, we also nickel plated them ourselves because there were no tinplated ferrules. Soon came the on-set of World War II and Green all but stopped making ferrules. The government came in and asked that we produce machine gun links on almost all of our machines. In 1951, Green purchased it's first ferrule making four slide machine, it was at this time we had our largest line of ferrules: Dutch & Baby Dutch Artists (Sable & Brite) Fitch - Flowing Handle Interlocked & Soldering Brass & Monel Tape Shooter Varnish, Wall, Square End, and Angular Lockseam An entire line of "Seamless" Ferrules Aluminum Inserts By the mid-1950's we purchased a second and larger 4-slide machine to meet the demands of the growing field of paint roller compontents. At this time we produced only the components, permitting our customers to assemble them to meet their specific needs. In 1964, John V. Green Jr. took over as president and decided to purchase more machinery to be able to increase our capacity. With this increase in machinery, we moved to our present factory which occupies 75,000 square feet on 7 acres of land. By the 1970's, Green saw it's largest internal growth where we doubled our machinery and the beginning of our second foreign competition. At this point, Green decided it has to diverify its product line to household items, general hardware, ammuntion and electronic parts. Even though the 1980's continued to be prosperious for Green, the paint roller and paint brush base began to dwindle toward the end of the decade do to foreign imports. As business continued to slow in the 1990's and more stamping businesses began to cease operation, we decided to purchase another company that was for sale in order to increase our own production. Presently, John V. Green III is the president and Rebecca Green Sullivan is VP. We are still a family owned and operated business with a non-union 40 person workforce. Our 75,000 square foot factory holds 18 four-slide machines, 36 automatic machines and over 100 presses. We also, have our own in-house tooling and design team. All of these factors allow us to continue to produce and sell paint and roller components on every continent. As times change, we at Charles E Green & Son will continue to grow and work with all of our customers to give them the same quality, dependabilty and customer service we feel has kept us operating for over 130 years.
