Solving Aerospace NDT Challenges with Mobile Barrier Systems

The testing team at a Long Beach aerospace facility was facing a familiar problem. Their work demands a constant stream of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), but their fixtures are so large, it is easier to bring shielding to the work than to commit to one fixed testing setup.

The mobile shielding units needed 1/8” of coverage and had to be strong enough to withstand exposure, heavy enough to shield, and still easy enough to move. Fixed barriers limited flexibility. Lead curtains sagged and couldn’t guarantee consistent protection. Each workaround introduced new risks, either to safety or to workflow.

The MarShield Team guided the client through the process of using standard barrier panel designs in a stacked and overlapping configuration. This approach ensured full shielding while reducing engineering time and cost!

How Do You Move a 300lb Portable Lead Shield Safely?

Each lead-lined barrier measured 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide, weighing in at 300 lbs. MarShield built these units with extended legs for maximum stability, allowing the mass of the shielding to remain balanced during movement and use.

To make repositioning safe and efficient, heavy-duty swivel casters were mounted at the base of each frame. These 360-degree wheels allow testing teams to roll barriers into place and lock them down quickly, without struggling against the weight or dragging risks common in lesser assemblies.

Clean and Durable NDT Barriers

The units were finished in a high-quality enamel coating. This smooth surface makes cleaning easier while giving the barriers a clean, professional appearance suitable for environments where both sanitation and presentation matter. Compared to hanging lead curtains, these barriers deliver higher attenuation and reduce variability during testing processes.

Results That Roll with the Work

MarShield’s mobile shielding barriers gave the aerospace team what off-the-shelf options could not!

  • Protection that travels to where the work happens
  • Stable structure that doesn’t compromise on safety
  • Better attenuation than flexible curtains
  • Lower risk of disruption to workflows

The testing team is no longer confined to a single location. Their NDT testing barriers move with them, improving efficiency while maintaining regulatory compliance and shielding effectiveness. Performance exceeds both operational and safety expectations, thus prompting the aerospace team to place a second order.

Stop Relying on Standard Shielding

When testing shifts across the facility, shielding has to move with it. Built for mobile use, radiation protection, and consistent performance in operational settings, MarShield’s shielding meets safety and compliance requirements. Custom solutions mean that you are not limited to off-the-shelf shielding that does not fit the job.
