Case Study: MarShield’s Mobile Shielding Barriers Reduce Workers Exposure to Radiation By 50%

Mars Metal Company/MarShield, Burlington, ON

Posted on Oct 4, 2021

An energy company based in Wisconsin (USA) was looking to reduce workers’ exposure to canisters filled with nuclear fuel. To remove the canisters, the company had to construct a scaffold framework that was not conducive for schedule optimization and for exposure reduction.

The company delivers clean energy across North America. They develop, construct, and operate power plants, including nuclear that produce electricity.

This energy company contacted MarShield to provide a solution to protect their workers from the radiation emitting from the canisters without building a permanent structure. We provided the customer with mobile shielded barriers that allowed for quick dispatch and removal of the canisters with nuclear fuel, reducing the rate of exposure for workers.

Product Specifications

MarShield designed and manufactured 20 Mobile Lead Lined Radiation Barriers for this customer. The full height solid panel barriers were 36” wide and 72” high. They were lined with 1/2” (12.70 mm) sheet lead with a solid steel frame and a powder coat beige paint finish.

These mobile barriers were fitted with four smooth rolling, heavy duty swivel casters, two of which could be easily locked into position when required.

Since receiving the mobile shielded barriers, exposure rates have been reduced by 50%, and potential injuries toworkers have been mitigated when handling, carrying, and installing 45-to-60-pound lead blankets!

The company saves time and can allocate resources where required because the need to install scaffold walls has been eliminated with MarShield’s mobile barriers.

The casters have allowed the customer to wheel the barriers in place when needed and also to wheel them out of place with little impact to the schedule while observing the appropriate exposure reduction.

Additionally, after acquiring the barriers, the customer no longer requires temporary shield permits from the Engineering and Operations departments, allowing them to expeditiously shield areas of elevated radiation to keep personal exposure as low as reasonably achievable under the station and regulatory requirements.

The customer has expressed immense satisfaction with the mobile barriers, praising them for their wonderful look, rugged construction, and excellent stability.
