The Ideology Behind the Energy-Efficient Radial Fan

A radial fan, also called a centrifugal fan, is a mechanical device designed to move air and other gasses. Because this fan’s design looks much like a hamster wheel, some people refer to it as a “squirrel cage fan.” While many industries prefer this type of fan, others lean toward the axial fan.

Essential Factors

When selecting a fan, you need to factor in several things. Although a centrifugal and axial fan perform well in moving air, they work in different ways; with that said, one fan is not necessarily better than another. Instead, the fan you choose depends on the application, environment, types of gaseous fumes, if applicable, and various other things.

To determine the type of fan you need, it helps to look at differences between a radial fan vs axial fan, two of the top choices.

Radial Fan vs. Axial Fan

Although both types of industrial fans move air, they each serve a unique purpose; for that reason, not all industries use the same kind of fan. While a radial style fan offers average volume airflow at high pressure, an axial fan provides large volume air displacement. There is also a difference in how air gets moved. For instance, a radial type fan has wheels, whereas, an axial fan relies on blades.

Radial fans produce stable airflow in over-pressure situations. In other words, these fans displace an average volume of air in high-pressure systems. Compared to axial fans, they offer two key advantages. First, they are extremely energy efficient, and second, they realize high pressure. They are ideal for displacing air in over-pressure situations and ensuring a stable and constant airflow in a channel. Also, these fans display air radially while changing airflow direction, usually by 90-degrees.

The other option is an axial fan which displaces a large volume of air. One main difference is that these fans work with low-pressure systems rather than high. Even with that, this type of fan has one significant advantage over a centrifugal fan: its size. As a smaller unit, an axial fan is easier to install in tight and odd-shaped spaces. Unfortunately, high turbulence is an issue with axial fans; along with increased noise, that turbulence reduces the lifespan of various parts and components.
