Publisher's Greeting
Welcome to the Canadian Trade Index (the CTI). The CTI has been the authoritative guide to buying and selling in Canada since 1900. It contains a comprehensive list of Canadian manufacturers, distributors and industrial service companies. As the foremost directory of its kind in Canada today, the CTI continues to be the gateway to business for companies at home and abroad.
The CTI is published annually and includes over 30,000 businesses whose listings are updated on an on-going basis throughout the year.
If your company is Canadian and not currently listed in the directory, please contact us by e-mail or phone to receive a listing form - or better yet, list your company in the CTI via the CTI website! Your help in making the CTI even more accurate is appreciated.

Our Story
The Canadian Trade Index (CTI) came into existence in the year 1900, a humble beginning that has developed into a directory that today is used worldwide.
P.W. Ellis, then the president of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association (now Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters) had a simple dream - he wanted to transform Canada's image. The world, and most parts of Canada itself, viewed the country solely as a supplier of raw
materials which other countries would purchase and transform into finished products. Canadian manufacturers were beginning to stake their claims within the production world, but seemed not to have a venue to make themselves known. So they formed the Canadian Manufacturers'
Association, and thus staged the birth of the Canadian Trade Index.
In 1900, the CTI made no claims of dominance, nor did it claim to be a complete directory of all of the manufacturers in Canada. It was simply the most complete listing of the time, comprised of 800 of the main manufacturing companies in the country. Not only did it include listings of these manufacturers, it had its own advertising section (though back then it was called "Display Announcements").
For just $2.00 a copy, Canadians had access to a whole new world of production. And "foreign merchants" were given free copies of the CTI to promote knowledge, and hopefully use, of Canadian manufacturers. With the distribution of 4,000 copies of the CTI at the 1900 Paris Exposition, CTI's global distribution had begun.
Today, the Canadian Trade Index is used extensively throughout Canada and worldwide, and has grown to an easy to read Print Edition, a comprehensive CD ROM and an easily navigable Web Site. The CTI contains detailed information on over 30,000 Canadian companies, featuring nearly 100,000 product listings under more than 20,000 headings.
Businesses have come to trust the CTI to supply them with the up-to-date company information required in today's fast-paced business environment.
P.W. Ellis could not have imagined that his idea would have blossomed in such a manner over the past century. Canada's image is transforming every day. Part of that we owe to a small businessman with a dream.
